Unique Backdrops | Budget Shopping

Listen up, photogs! You don’t have to spend a ton of money on backdrops. In the past, I did a little article for my other website, Pink Ink Studios about something similar. But, I wanted to show you a few things and say, you don’t have to go overboard with studio backdrops.

I don’t do much in the way of full body shooting when it comes to studio work. A) I don’t have that kind of room and B) I prefer shooting on location, outdoors. BUT, I LOVE LOVE LOVE being able to offer something unique and different when I shoot headshots in studio. These are also great ideas for working with kids and babies – especially during the cold, snowy winter months.

Visit your local fabric store! Last night, I went up to my Hancocks and found this beauty 40% off. I grabbed it all. They are only about 45″ wide for upholstery fabrics. BUT, they tend to be more bigger and bolder in patterns. That’s just what I need! And, at that width, it’s easy to do a headshot!

Before that, I got my black and white damask at Artistic Fabrics up the street and used it in this shot of senior, Ashley. See how easy it is to spend a little bit to get a unique backdrop?

Dress the Whole Family | St. Louis Portrait Photographer

When photographing families, the number one question I get is, “what do we wear?” I certainly can’t decide your outfits for you, but I LOVE helping! In fact, I enjoy when people ask to do a consultation and have me look at their clothes and help them decide what pieces work well with each other.
My key piece of advice when dressing the entire family is “Don’t do matching!” Now, matching is not the same as coordinating. You want to dress your entire family as if you were dressing ONE person. So, you wouldn’t wear orange pants, orange shirt and orange shoes, with an orange necklace…would you? So, why would you dress everyone in head-to-toe orange?
Dress the family as if you were dressing ONE person. What does that mean? Let’s give an example to work with. You have a one-year old, little girl. You found the perfect little plaid dress (remember, we don’t like clothes with characters and words on them…it’s just not part of the style we shoot). That dress has the colors of lavender, periwinkle, deep purple, navy, and buttercream yellow. It’s got the most adorable peony flower attached at the ribbon that goes around the empire waist. Sounds pretty, huh?
Once you find that key piece, you can start coordinating pieces from that for the rest of the family. Maybe dad is wearing dressier jeans (no rips and tears) and putting him in a navy polo that matches the dress takes care of him. Easy!
Then, it’s time to dress your four-year old boy. Of course, you could put him in jeans like dad, but be careful that you limit the denim to not overdo it. Maybe the little guy would look great in a pair of khaki shorts and a white shirt with a sweater vest in the buttercream yellow.
And, mom. How can we forget mom? I think mom’s look great in maxi dresses…they hide flaws and accentuate curves. And, a pretty solid colored one in lavender or purple would compliment this photo perfectly!
Now, you’re all dressed with your key pieces! Accessorize with fun jewelry and make sure shoes look new and fresh. Dirty brand-name sneakers with those swooshes aren’t the best choices. Barefoot is cute too!
See, it really is simple. I have no rules regarding stripes and sleeves. I just feel like you should be dressing in what is comfortable, but also in a style that would look good for years to come, hanging in your home.
Some sites I recommend shopping from when choosing outfits for family photos:

You can see a storyboard featuring samples of these clothes in Kaboodle – where you can find where to buy pieces like these.

Run! Hurry!

Okay, so did that headline grab ya? I thought this cute photo of some of the kids from Allison and Dave’s wedding in Ohio were so fun! We shot a few of them playing and running. They make a good marketing campaign for:

Portrait Suggestions | E-Session Outfits

One of the things I’ve been working on is a PDF that goes out to my clients when they book a session with me. It’s the number one question I get, “What should we wear?”

The answer is easy – wear something that reflects your style and personality, but is comfortable. Look, let’s be honest, this isn’t a department store photography studio, where you set up in front of a cheesy backdrop and get blinded by a bright flash (okay, maybe if you’re doing the Lollipop Smiles photos with me it is).

So, as I’m gearing up my design of these handouts, I figured, I might use a blog post from time-to-time to give you suggestions on great clothing options. I myself am NOT a fashion maven. In fact, you’ll most likely find me in jeans and t-shirts; and I have been known to only buy the color black when it comes to dressier clothes. I don’t know why. But, these outfits and clothing pieces really stand out to me.

For E-sessions (and most any group sessions) you want to match, but not matchy matchy. I mean this in the way of colors that compliment each other. Maybe its spring and you might wear a fun pink while your future spouse opts for a complimenting bright green polo. Or something like that. I also always suggest that ladies wear tank tops so it’s easier to change tops or put on a jacket if there is no place to change. When in doubt, pack a trunk-load of clothes for your session. We’ll never use them all, but it is nice when I can see what you have and make suggestions – plus a few changes give you more options to choose from. Jeans are the easy way out – think outside of the box!

Here are some fun finds for E-sessions that you might like too!
