Politics? EEK!

I really thought long and hard about posting a “political” blog post. And, then I said to myself that it really can’t be about a candidate in particular, or my choice. While I should be able to post what I want because, after all, this is my blog and my thoughts, it just sometimes doesn’t work that way. I have friends that have been attacked for their beliefs and choices. I have friends on social media sites that were *unfriended* because of who they support.

So, when I started thinking about this post, it became clear to me what I wanted to say.

Education.

No, not the issue of education as to what a party supports or doesn’t support.

I mean “EDUCATE YOURSELF”.

No joke…my mom told me of someone she knows that at the last primary said to her, “I vote X party all the time. I don’t even know what the issues are, or who is running”.

HUH?

Seriously?

Or, better yet, my grandmother who believes anything someone tells her. Rather than making an educated choice or finding the facts, she will allow another person (or her church) tell her what she should believe and vote for.

Those things really came to mind to me. Oh, and then there is the political discussions I’ve had with friends and other online people this week – being the DNC has been going on, another candidate choosing a running mate, etc. It’s bound to come up. I believe in healthy discussions…so long as you can discuss the reasons you support your candidate.

Unfortunately, opposers to my choice haven’t told me WHY their candidate is a good choice. I’m all for hearing reasons and issues. I’m all for understanding why someone believes one person is better for the job. Hell, I’ve been known to change my mind because of that.

It’s no secret that I lean to the left. I’m not going to deny that. However, I do like to take the “quizzes” on the issues online and discover who my candidate should be. No, my candidate isn’t part of the two TOP parties.

When I take the quizzes it always comes out the same. I will admit that I vote realistically and choose the candidate that has a better chance and is closest to my issues and beliefs. I would probably bet that 99% of people that would take some of these issue quizzes would find that who they say they support, isn’t in their #1 spot. Maybe if we all voted for the candidate that comes out on top on our quizzes, we wouldn’t always have it be a fight between the two major parties.

So, my point?

It’s about educating yourself.

When I have taken the quizzes, I have had to google some things, some acts, some issues. I admit, I don’t know 100% of every thing out there that a candidate supports or opposes.

I’ve said this before…I think voters should have to take a test and score above a certain percentile in order to be able to vote. This would eliminate a lot of the crap we may have or may get ourselves into as a country. It would force the American voters to really pay attention and, oh gasp, even care!

Now, I challenge you to quiz yourself. Take a moment to learn something NEW every day about EACH of the candidates. I made it a point to learn about a new candidate yesterday – and now I feel more confident in my own decision thus far. It’s a long road to November. Everyone shouldn’t vote for someone because they are a man, a woman, a black person, a white person, whether they have served in the military or not, have kids or not.

Educate yourself. It’s the best thing you can do.

Here are some links to some quizzes and don’t be afraid to look things up on Wikopedia!

Okay, now, please don’t bash me for my beliefs, or because I posted this. I don’t want to hear WHO you choose or why. I just want you to educate yourself. You are welcome to comment on THAT point, but not a political choice. Let’s keep the discussion respectful!

August 30, 2008 - 3:07 pm Alice - Amen !!! I totally agree with you on the education, Holly ! This is so important ! For me education is the key to everything ! When you're educated you're able to find things out alone without being influenced ! You can make your own judgement. In developped countries like France (or US) if people don't educate themselves it's because of their lazyness ! It's a shame they don't take elections seriously. The right to vote was acquired in the blood and not that long ago, and people should remember this ! They also should remember that in some countries some people are still fighting to get the right to vote !!!! I stop here, i could go on and on for hours !!!! LOL

August 30, 2008 - 3:10 pm Paige - Great post Holly!!! I agree with you 100%!! I can respect anyone's choice... just tell me one reason why. Don't tell me because they believe in change...but rather what kind of change are they promoting. Don't tell me because they have more experience... instead what kind of experience do they have that makes them more qualified. And the ones that really irritate me are the race and gender reasons!!! Oh but then we also have the I never cross party lines reason too!!! People are too often easily influenced by the media and celebrity endorsements... people should vote on who they share common beliefs with. I also think that we should consider these sames things when we elect people to Congress and the Senate! They are just as important as the presidential election if not more!

August 30, 2008 - 4:18 pm Becks - Well I follow US politics from over the pond - and love the debate and genius that goes into all the plotting, speeches and media relations. I am pretty sure that you lot are in for a fun filled few months - and I am intriqued by the outcome... it is better than American Idol ;) xxx

August 30, 2008 - 6:39 pm Jenn Bertsch - Thanks for posting these- I took 3 of them and got a different canidate each time. One for Barr, One for McCain, One for Obama. I guess I'm pretty much a centralist. LOL

August 30, 2008 - 9:13 pm Jenny - Holly - I 100% echo the sentiments you wrote in your post. Its not just our right, but our responsibility to educate ourselves and vote. I've lived all over this world, and I've seen countries where people would literally die for the rights we often take for granted. It infuriates me when people are so cavalier as to say they won't be voting, or they simply vote down party lines without eduating themselves on the running candidate. With a brother in the military, I know how precious the gift of freedom is, and how important a role we as citizens play in its success. Thanks for getting the word out! Jenny

August 30, 2008 - 10:49 pm Tania - You rock, my political soul sista ;) What I'm tired of myself is the talking heads on all the so-called cable news stations telling people what they should think. So this time, I turned on CSPAN and watched the DNC coverage comment free. It was liberating I tell ya!! Not that I don't enjoy watching Chris Mathews loose it once in a while, or Obberman tell people to get a shovel, LOL, but I just needed to hear the speeches, what everyone was really saying. Shhh!! Don't tell anyone here in the liberal oasis of the San Fran Bay Area, but I might even watch the RNC on CSPAN too, maybe I'll learn some things that can help me understand "the other side". Anyway, I commend you for your willingness to post on such a topic (it always draws me out of my lurk mode) and finally, I am more excited than ever for November!!!

August 31, 2008 - 4:19 pm carrie - Awesome post, holly! I completely agree that people need to be educated and not vote, just to vote. (I sometimes believe it becomes a popularity contest and that is not how we should choose our President.) No, we can't know everything and the average American will never know what it really takes to be President. Best thing we can do is educate ourselves to understand the issues and candidates. :0)

September 1, 2008 - 7:03 am deann - great post - and you are SO right...it's not about WHO YOU ARE PERSONALLY voting for (though you and i have talked about this more than once...you SHOULD be able to post your thoughts and opinions on your own blog, but we know what that gets a lot of people) but that you are an INFORMED VOTER! i too have been SHOCKED when i speak with people and they say things like, "oh, i vote for who every my husband tells me to vote for" or "i vote the party line" or "i DON'T vote!" i've always believed that you don't have to agree w/me, or vote the same way (though that would be really nice and make my life easier if my candidate always won - lol!) but PLEASE BELIEVE in who YOU are voting for. great list of resources - thanks again! xoxo,d
