The Pottery Barn Knock-Off

June5

I’ve had a few people ask me about the desk I made last year that resembles the Pottery Barn one.

My friend’s hubby works for PB part time and she has the original and gave me her measurements because the ones found on their website sorta confused me the way they had them written out. I don’t have my measurements at the moment for mine, but once I get all moved maybe I can get those again.

I didn’t do a great job photographing the side for you, but let’s see if I can explain it.

1 - I purchased two cubing shelf systems from Target in white. These here to be exact. Mine were on sale.

2 - Then, I headed to Lowe’s to purchase MDF for the top. These come in large sheets so I had to get them cut there to the dimension I needed. I can measure later once I get the move all done.

3 - Also purchased were a a couple of flat trim pieces and white finishing nails.

4. Building the shelves helps if you have a second person to hold them, but those were simple.

5. The top being cut left me with some extra pieces that I had my uncle cut into pieces that allowed me to build a box underneath the top so that it doesn’t shift around. It looks like this if looking down on it.

6 - You definitely need two people to place it on and get your two shelves in just the right spot.

7 - The trim pieces were made to go around the top edges of the top MDF board to create a lip. This way it also doesn’t slide so much too.

Finally - once I get moved I plan on repainting the top and putting a nice coat of sealer on it. I think I spent a total of $150 when all was said in done.

Here’s the PB version for $1099.
